Covenant Falls 2-1 At Birmingham Southern

  • Tuesday, September 27, 2016
The Covenant men's soccer team pushed regional foe Birmingham Southern into overtime, but the host Panthers came away with the game-winning goal in the 93rd minute to defeat the Scots 2-1 on Tuesday night at Preston Goldfarb Field.

Covenant (1-7-1) played even with Birmingham Southern throughout the match. The Scots took a 1-0 lead in the 65th minute when Jesse Riggs pushed the ball forward through the Panthers defense and found the back of the net past keeper Galen Curry. The goal was Riggs' third of the season, which leads the team.

Less than two minutes later, Birmingham Southern (7-1) knotted the score at one apiece.
Off a set piece, Spencer Nichols slipped his shot past Covenant keeper Jonathan Crossman, assisted by Dylan Rose, to make it 1-1.

The score stayed that way the rest of regulation. Covenant nearly took advantage of an opportunity in the waning seconds of the period, but Josh Brower's shot from the left side of the 18-yard box hit the post and bounded away.

In the first overtime session, Birmingham Southern notched the game-winner just over two minutes into the period. Conner Quiggle received a pass from Patrick Erickson and put it away to give the Panthers the 2-1 victory.

Crossman made six saves on the night, while Curry made four for Birmingham Southern. The Panthers held a 24-10 shot edge. Brower had three shots for Covenant, while Riggs and Christopher Kitchen had two attempts apiece.
