The Lee women’s golf team will be eight strokes out of the lead when they enter the final 18 holes of play on Sunday in the Battle at Old South being hosted by UNC-Pembroke.
Led by freshman Annika Gino, 1-under 71, the Lady Flames finished Saturday’s opening round with an even 300-team total. St. Leo (Fla.) is the first round leader, carding a 292. Host Pembroke is second (283), followed by Montevallo (285), Young Harris and Armstrong State (286). A large field of 18 teams are taking part in the tournament.
Marie Coors (St.
Leo) set the pace in the medalist competition with a sizzling 66. Gino is tied for fifth. Sam Burrus came in with a 74 for the Lady Flames. Newcomer Haverly Harrold followed with a 77. Caroline Moore tallied a 78 and Anne Hedegaard (79) rounded out Lee’s scoring
“Our girls got off to a pretty good start today,” said Lee assistant coach Hunter Vest. “We are extremely proud of the way Annika battled after a slow start to her round.
“All in all everyone fought hard for every shot and never gave up,” added Vest. “However, it was disappointing to see us lose a few shots coming in on the final few holes. The course is in great shape and very gettable. I feel that our best round is still to come tomorrow.”
