Boyd Buchanan School Unveils New Playscape For Elementary

  • Monday, August 29, 2016
Boyd Buchanan School has completed one of “the largest Elementary Parent Council funded projects ever,” according to Elementary Principal Gail Maddux. The school’s $90,000 new playscape design is inspired by children’s literature and contains storybook quotes throughout the area.

“We took a nontraditional approach to the typical playground design,” said Ms. Maddux. “More than physical activity, the new playscape is intended to promote collaboration, enhance social development, and emphasize spiritual characteristics such as empathy, kindness, and reverence,” she adds.

According to school officials the playscape includes many interactive areas such as a log cabin with a stage, an art studio, an archeological dig site, an area for musical play, and more.
A few core playground pieces remain from the previous structure, including the swing set.

Boyd Buchanan contracted C.O.R.E. Associates to design and develop the playscape project. “The playscape was developed based on eight different books and ten credos from Clifford the Big Red Dog book series: Share, Play fair, Have respect, Work together, Help others, Be responsible, Be a good friend, Be truthful, Be kind, Help others,” states Vicki Flesner of C.O.R.E. Associates.

The playscape opened on the first day of school with a formal dedication planned for later in the year.

Founded in 1952, Boyd Buchanan School is an independent, Christian school focusing on academic, spiritual, athletic, and social development for students, PK-12. Home of the Buccaneers, BBS is located on approximately 60 acres and provides extraordinary academic preparation in a nurturing, Christ-centered environment focused on service to others. BBS students exemplify character, values and faith.
