Mobile, Al. – St. Paul’s Episcopal School in Mobile announced on Thursday that John Redman has been hired as their Head Men’s Basketball Coach. St. Paul’s is located on property bought from Spring Hill College, where Redman played basketball in college.

Dr. Mark Foley, Headmaster, and Coach Steve Mask, Athletic Director, made the announcement. The move ends Redman’s successful run as an assistant to Coach Tony Ingle at Dalton State. Redman will begin his responsibilities on August 8th.

In the first three season of basketball, the Roadrunners accumulated 77 victories against only 19 defeats.  Dalton State was the 2014-2015 Southern States Athletic Conference regular season champion. They went on to win the 2015 NAIA National Championship at Memorial Auditorium in Kansas City, Mo.

“My time with Coach Ingle was amazing and I love him like a father,” said Redman. “Words can not fully express how grateful I am for the opportunity he gave me three years ago. I will always think of Coach Ingle and his wife, Mrs. Jeanne, as family.”

The native of Spanish Fort, Al. said Dalton State is and always will feel like home. “The Dalton State community blew my mind with their love and support,” he said. “I will be forever indebted to Dalton State College, Coach Ingle, and the DSC Athletic Department. I will never forget the NAIA National Championship Tournament in Kansas City. Winning that tournament changed my life forever. Leaving our players, coaching staff, and school is tough but I know that Dalton State will continue to thrive.”

Ingle is excited for his former assistant. “I could not be happier for Coach Redman,” he said. “I feel like it is a perfect fit for him at this time and I could never thank him enough for everything he did to help us build a solid basketball program. He will do an outstanding job and I’m sure he will be thrilled to be back closer to his hometown, among his friends and family.”

Ingle expressed his appreciation for Redman’s contributions on and off of the court. “He worked tirelessly and with efficiency in every thing that I asked him to do,” Ingle said. “We could never have won the 2015 NAIA National Championship without him by my side. I love him and will miss him tremendously.”

“What a great opportunity for an aspiring young coach,” said Jon Jaudon, Dalton State’s new Director of Athletics.  “I have only known John for a short time but I have been impressed. In talking to several leaders at the college, they were quick to praise John for his professionalism in all their interactions. We desire nothing but success for John in all of his endeavors.”

St. Paul’s Episcopal School is a highly respected institution that has won more Alabama state championships in a variety of sports than any other school. Redman said there have been 187 championship teams for the school.

The list of acclaimed former Saints athletes includes former University of Alabama and current NFL quarterbacks A. J. McCarron and Jake Coker.  Other notable alumni are NFL players Mark Baron and Checks Jackson; Major League Baseball’s Jake Peavy, Kyle McPherson, and Destin Wood; and PGA golfer Zach Slusher.

Mask, who continues to serve as head football coach for St. Paul’s, was named as Director of Athletics earlier this month. He replaced Jimmy Messer who was also the basketball coach. Messer is now the Head of School at Cottage Hill Christian Academy in Mobile.
