After a day off Monday and playing again at the friendly confines of AT&T, the Lookouts were ready to snap a four-game losing streak. Unfortunately things did not go as planned as the Tennessee Smokies clobbered Chattanooga Tuesday night, 13-9.

The Lookouts tried their best to overcome a deficit that stretched to 12-0 at one point but the comeback fell short.

There were 31 hits in the game - Smokies with 17 and Lookouts 14.

Aaron Slegers first game back from the disabled list started promisingly, as the righty put down the Smokies in order, retiring Major League players Jorge Soler and Chris Coghlan on weak ground outs in the process.

But the wheels fell off quickly on Slegers’ return when Tennessee scored six runs in the second, beginning a long night for the Lookouts in a 13-9 loss.

Slegers left the game after finishing the second with a final line of five hits, six earned runs allowed and a pair walked while suffering his fifth loss of the season. The defeat snapped a string of six consecutive wins and nine straight quality starts for Slegers who fell to 8-5 with a 3.83 ERA on the season.

Brandon Peterson, Ryan Eades and Tyler Jay each threw multiple innings to save the rest of Chattanooga’s relief pitchers for the rest of the series.

Coghlan, the 2009 National League Rookie of the Year playing in his fourth Major League rehab game, went 2-for-3 with two RBI.

Peterson pitched the third and fourth innings with four runs allowed on four hits, before Eades took over with three innings of two run ball, and Jay allowed a final run in the last two frames.

The first of Chattanooga’s runs came in the bottom of the fifth when Ryan Walker (2-for-4) drove in Zack Granite, setting the table for Mitch Garver. The catcher drilled a ball off the very top of the left-centerfield wall, initially getting credited with his 10th home run, before a discussion between the umpires and both team’s managers ended with Garver back at nine long balls and settling for a RBI double.

The Lookouts tacked on two more in the sixth with runs driven in from Shannon Wilkerson and Engelb Vielma, before going quiet until the bottom of the ninth.

With their final three outs, Chattanooga brought five runs home off Smokies pitcher RJ Alvarez beginning with a Granite double to left field and capped by DJ Hicks scoring on a double-play ball.

The excitement would end for the Lookouts’ fans there though as Edgar Corcino flied out to centerfield to end the game.

The Lookouts defense leads the league with a .984 team fielding percentage and lowest error total with 61 in 101 games. Chattanooga also leads the league in double plays turned with 111.
