The Dalton Fire Department honored nine firefighters on Tuesday morning for their lifesaving efforts in two recent incidents. Unit citations were presented to A-Shift firefighters from Engine 2, and A-Shift firefighters from Engine 1 and Squad 1 at Tuesday morning’s meeting of the Dalton Public Safety Commission.

On July 8, firefighters from Engine 2 were dispatched to a car crash on South Thornton Avenue and found a female patient on scene who was unresponsive and not breathing. Firefighters quickly got her out of her vehicle, applied an automated external defibrillator (AED), and began CPR. Firefighters from Engine 2 completed three cycles of CPR and administered three shocks with their AED before EMS arrived on scene to take over. Their lifesaving actions led to the recovery of the patient. Lieutenant Randy Rogers, Engineer Brandon Elliot, and Firefighter Bobby Blackwell were honored with Unit Citations.

In the second incident, Engine 1 was dispatched to Griffin Street to a report of an unconscious infant. When firefighters arrived, they found a 2 month old who was not breathing. They immediately began CPR and requested Squad 1 for assistance. When Squad 1 arrived, they took over care until EMS arrived. After Hamilton EMS took over, the child started to breathe again and started to cry. Engineer Dale Stratton continued to provide care for the infant, riding with Hamilton EMS with the baby to Erlanger in Chattanooga. Firefighter III Greg Metcalf, Engineer Jason Suddeth, Firefighter Ronald Murray from Engine 1 and Engineer Dale Stratton, Firefighter Brandon Glass, and Firefighter Justin Cole from Squad 1 were honored with Unit Citations.

The Dalton Public Safety Commission is comprised of Chairman William B. Weaver, Carlos Calderin, Terry Mathis, Keith Whitworth, and Kenneth E. Willis.
