We Will Never Forget

  • Monday, July 18, 2016
Last week our community commemorated the lives of the Fallen Five – the four U.S. Marines and a Navy petty officer slain here during the July 16, 2015, terrorist attack. Hopefully, we all recalled the swift and brave response of local law enforcement officers, one of whom was shot by the terrorist. Only our police prevented more bloodshed, injury, and death.

The fanatic jihadist wanted to devastate the spirit of Chattanooga.  He failed miserably. Then and now, we stood together -- Chattanooga Strong.
But lest we rely on our own strength, we must also humble ourselves and pray for the help and mercy of God.

As a U.S. Marine combat veteran who served in Iraq and Afghanistan, the terror attack upon my city and my brothers-in-arms was far more than a news event. It was personally offensive, because I have been under fire, and I have seen men suffer and die for America.  That attack was an assault upon everything I love – my God, my country, our Constitution, and our liberties.  As a father, I am concerned that my children, and yours, have a future of peace and freedom.

To honor the personnel at the Armed Forces Center on Lee Highway, I arranged for my business, Wysong Tree Service, to go on location there last Friday to grill steaks, vegetables, and serve up homemade mashed potatoes on the side.  What a privilege.

While we were there, lots of people came to the nearby memorial site. No doubt, everyone was inspired by the sight of a huge poster-version of the American flag hanging over the entrance from the boom of a crane provided by Robert Batey and B&B Crane; the banner proclaimed, “We Will Never Forget.”  Amen.

Sincerely,

Daniel Wysong
Sergeant, USMC (Ret)
