Flame Golfers Struggle On Last Day Of NCAA Super Region 2

  • Wednesday, May 4, 2016

The 2015-16 season came to an end for the Lee men's golf team on Wednesday and it did not end as well as coach John Maupin and his team had hoped.

The Flames recorded a 314-team total on Wednesday and finished the 54-hole event with a 918 (15th place).

"Unfortunately, this was a really disappointing week for us," said the Lee coach after the final round.

"I feel for our guys, because I know this isn't how any of us wanted this season to end.

"We just didn't have it this week. It was probably our worst tournament of the season and it just came at a bad time. I think we just wanted it to much this week. Hopefully it's an experience our program can benefit from in the future."

Maupin praised his two (four-year) seniors. "A couple of great careers came to a close today. Peyton (Sliger) and Taylor (Davis) are two of the best players we've had come through our program, and on top of that they are even better people. They have brought a lot of positive attention to our program and I'm very grateful."

Shea Sylvester was best for the Flames on Wednesday (75). Next came Sliger (78), followed by Corey Sheppard (79). Davis finished with an 82 and Adam Wright carded an 84.

Five Florida programs will advance to the NCAA D2 Nationals. Lynn (863), St. Leo (866), Florida Southern (868), West Florida (874) and Barry (882 were by far the best in the field of 20 teams.

Lynn's Manuel Torres walked away with the medalist crown. He turned in a 10-under 206 performance.

For the Lee women, hopes of a top 4 finish in the NCAA Super Region 2 slipped away on the last six holes of Wednesday's final round of the 54-hole event at the Marcus Pointe Golf Club.

"The girls played a really good tournament and unfortunately that last six holes really got away from us," pointed out coach John Maupin after viewing the final totals. "This is such a strong field and we were right in the mix for a top four, and again, unfortunately we just had a really poor finish to our round.

"I want to give Hunter, (Lee assistant coach Vest) a lot of credit. "He did a great job coaching the team this week and putting them in position to have a good finish.

"Our girls played some of their best golf at the end of the season, and as a team I felt like we kept improving throughout the semester. As a coach that's exactly what you want to see. I think it was a very good first season in D2.

Maupin added that two awesome careers finished up today. "Bernadette (Little) and Callie (Gino) have played some fantastic golf for us over the years, and have been major contributors to a lot of team success. On top of that they are excellent role models of what we expect from our players off the course and as leaders. I'm really going to miss them. I am very grateful for all their hard work."

Caroline Moore's 80 was the best score recorded for the Lady Flames on Wednesday. Sam Burrus and Little tallied 82s while Gino had an 83 and Cailey Kitchens rounded out the scoring with an 86. Lee's final team total on Wednesday was 327 and the three-day worksheet reached 941.

Three Florida programs will advance to the Denver, Colo. area for the D2 Nationals. Nova Southeastern carted away the top team trophy (884). Rollins College (898) was second, followed by St. Leo (902).

Nova Southeastern's Jamie Freedman and Aldana Folgel deadlocked for the medalist honors. Each turned in a 2-over par 218.
