The Department of History at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga is excited to announce its 3rd annual African American History event, to be held on Tuesday, May 10, from 6:00-7:30 pm at the Bessie Smith Cultural Center (http://www.bessiesmithcc.org/).
Against the backdrop of the Bessie's new exhibit on "Negro League Baseball in Chattanooga," a panel of community participants (listed below) will engage in a candid but constructive discussion about the relationships – past, present, and future – among the Lincoln Park, Warner Park, Engel Stadium, and UTC communities.
Moderated by UTC History professor William Kuby, this event will probe matters of race, class, and power relations, historical actions and memory, and the use of and access to recreational spaces in these adjacent but oftentimes detached neighborhoods. Ideally such conversations will offer possible paths forward for historical recognition and reconciliation, and for future community collaboration.
