Community Aids In Chattanooga National Cemetery Flag Pick-Up

  • Tuesday, May 31, 2016

Through an outpouring of support from the public and the local media, Chattanooga National Cemetery was able to pick up and store around 45,000 flags decorating graves throughout the nearly 150 year old cemetery in under seven hours on Tuesday.

"The community effort allowed us to secure all flags within one day, which is usually a seven-day project," Mike Henshaw, the cemetery director said.

The cemetery received volunteers of all ages throughout the day Tuesday.

“I am indescribably proud of the people of Chattanooga and the surrounding communities for their showing of support for our veterans and their families, as well as all of the staff here at Chattanooga National Cemetery. The value and importance of their efforts are evident from the day the first flag was placed on Saturday morning, until the last flag was picked up today at 2:30 p.m.,” Mr. Henshaw said.

He said, "On behalf of the Chattanooga National Cemetery, the Chattanooga Area Veterans Council, and the Cherokee Scout Council, thank you for your support of our nation's heroes."
