The Chattanooga Police Department will be partnering with the Tennessee Highway Patrol and other local agencies within Hamilton County to step up DUI enforcement this Memorial Day holiday.
“This is about preventing irresponsible and reckless driving,” said Lieutenant Adrian Gibb of the Chattanooga Police Department's Traffic Division.
“We strongly believe highly visible, publicized, and frequently conducted campaigns lead to safer roadways.”
Drivers can expect to see checkpoints and additional officers on the roadways. These officers will be focused on identifying and preventing drunk driving.
The Police Department asks community members to drink responsibly, and if you have been drinking don't get behind the wheel of a car. Police point out that there are local alternative transportation options, like CARTA - who run a free shuttle service downtown, Uber, and taxis.
"A single DUI conviction can cost an individual $5,000 or more in addition to jail time," said the Assistant Chief over Special Operations, Danna Vaughn. "Offenders could also be required to attend drug and alcohol treatment or to install an ignition interlock device in their vehicle. "
