Bike, Hike, Climb Lookout Mountain NPS Centennial Event June 11

  • Thursday, May 26, 2016

Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park, in partnership with Outdoor Chattanooga, invites the public to find their park during a special event celebrating the National Park Service Centennial.  "Come rock climb, hike, and mountain bike the slopes of Lookout Mountain on Saturday, June 11 between 9 am and 4 pm at Cravens House," organizers said.

"As the National Park Service launches into its second century of preserving special places across the United States, the time has never been better to explore new facets of the national parks. Come explore an icon of Chattanooga—Lookout Mountain—and perhaps see it in a new way as you rock climb up the face of its cliffs, spin along the trails on a mountain bike, or learn about the mountain’s history as you hike along its paths. Outdoor Chattanooga and National Park Service staff and volunteers will ensure a safe and fascinating new experience as you discover or re-discover your local national park," officials said.

All events will stage with registration at Cravens House on Lookout Mountain. Participants are asked to bring a water bottle and wear weather appropriate clothing. Events will be as follows:

Rock climbing activities will begin at 9 a.m. with registration slots every hour until 3 p.m. Volunteers will lead participants on a 1-mile hike from Cravens House to the climbing area near Sunset Rock. Parking will not be available at Sunset Rock, only at Cravens House.

Mountain bike rides will begin at 9 a.m., noon, and 3 p.m. at Cravens House. Outdoor Chattanooga will have a limited number of bikes available for use. Pre-register for a bike by calling Outdoor Chattanooga at 423-643-6888.

Hikes will begin at Cravens House at 9 a.m., noon, and 3 p.m. with routes of approximately 2-4 miles with moderate difficulty. Be sure to wear sturdy hiking shoes.

"Be sure to collect a special commemorative giveaway—available while supplies last," organizers said.
