Chattanooga Airport Customers To Have Choice Of Thousands Of Books

  • Wednesday, May 25, 2016

Travelers at the Chattanooga Airport will have their choice of thousands of books come July.

William Sundquist of Friends of the Library said the venture will be a first for the nation.

He said the group plans to stock shelves between the ticket counter and the escalator leading up to the flights.

Potential purchasers will be on the honor system to drop cash in a box, run a credit card through, or use Pay Pal via the Internet.

The price per book will be in the $3 to $5 range, Mr. Sundquist said.

He said the books are mainly donated to the Friends group or are library discards.

The group will pay rent of $50 per month for the space.

The proceeds will go to projects benefiting the public library.

Also at the Airport, Talley Construction had the winning bid of $2,405,414 for the second phase of improvement of the east ramp. Talley did the work on the initial phase. Cost to engineer the project will be $257,825.

Designing the third phase will cost $167,760.

Through a partnership with CARTA and TVA, the Airport will be getting new electric vehicle charging stations.

They will go in the Long Term 2 lot.

The Airport is buying two boarding bridges to go with several on hand - including some over 40 years ago. Officials said the new bridges work much better than the old ones.

The cost from JBT Airtech will be $1.2 million.

DHW won an award for the sustainability design for the update to the Airport terminal.

West Star Aviation, which is making a $22 million investment at the airfield, will be bringing over 200 new jobs.

Terry Hart, Airport president, announced that the Airport has obtained the old Air National Guard site and will be looking to develop the long-vacant property.

He said, "It gives us a lot of additional opportunities."
