HCDE Interim Superintendent Kirk Kelly Announces 2 Assistant Superintendent Appointments

  • Monday, May 23, 2016

Hamilton County Department of Education Interim Superintendent Dr. Kirk Kelly announced on Monday two new appointments. Dr. Kelly appointed Zac Brown as assistant superintendent for School Operations and Justin Robertson as assistant superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction. Mr. Brown and Mr. Robertson will report to Jill Levine, the chief academic officer.

“Both Zac and Justin bring a wealth of experience in education, a proven track record of success and an enthusiasm for moving our district forward.  I am confident that they will provide strong support to teachers and administrators throughout our district,“ said Superintendent Kelly.

Mr. Brown is the principal of The Howard School and previously served as the principal at East Ridge High School.  He began his teaching career as a high school math teacher and wrestling coach at Rhea County High School.  Over the past three years at Howard, Mr. Brown increased the graduation rate, created an English as a second language program, grew enrollment by over 200 students, and transitioned the school to a 1:1 (one student, one device) technology school.

"I truly believe that we have talented teachers and administrators in this district. We can bring that talent together as a team to move the district forward in bold and creative ways," said Mr. Brown.

Mr. Robertson, principal at Red Bank High School, brings a unique perspective to the assistant superintendent position, as he has served as an elementary, middle, and high school principal. Prior to returning home to Chattanooga, he was a teacher at Germantown High School and an assistant principal in the Shelby County Schools. Before his tenure at Red Bank High School, he served as the principal at Brown Middle School and Lookout Valley Elementary and assistant principal at Normal Park Museum Magnet. He is working with the Governor’s Academy of School Leadership as a mentor principal.

“I am passionate about improving the educational opportunities for all students and firmly believe that as a community we can build a top tier public school system in Chattanooga,” Mr. Robertson stated. “I am humbled by this opportunity and look forward to supporting principals, teachers, and students throughout Hamilton County.”

Dr. Kelly also announced the following new central office assignments:

Robert Sharpe – director of Secondary School Operations

Becky Coleman – director of Pre-K Programs

Aimee Randolph – coordinator of Teacher Recruitment

Keri Randolph – director of Technology

Additional administrative assignments, including principal and assistant principal assignments, will be announced on Friday.
