Thankful United Methodist To Leave Religious Coalition For Reproductive Choice

  • Saturday, May 21, 2016

My thanks to the the United Methodist Church for voting to require church boards and agencies to withdraw immediately from the Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice during their quadrennial General Conference meeting May 19, in Portland, Or.

With 12.1 million members the United Methodist Church was one of the largest members of the Religious Coalition.

Here is the text of Petition 60837 approved by a vote of 425 to 268 (61 percent to 39 percent)
"Withdraw from Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice (60837-CB-NonDis-G)

"The 2016 General Conference instructs the General Board of Church and Society and the United Methodist Women to withdraw immediately from membership in the Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice.

"RATIONALE

"RCRC is a one-sided political lobby that opposes all disapproval or limitation of abortion. RCRC's advocacy often directly contradicts our Social Principles on abortion, but it still uses our Church's name. Several annual conferences and many United Methodist leaders have urged the Church to end all association with RCRC."
