Christine Young
Christine Whatley Young, 101, died on Sunday, May 1, 2016 in Smyrna, GA.
She was born to Jerry and Lulu Green Whatley on September 13, 1914 in Spaulding County (now Griffin), Georgia. She was a cosmetologist and operated a beauty salon in her home in the Alton Park neighborhood for nearly 40 years. She was previously an active member of Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church in Chattanooga, serving in the women’s guild and choir. The greatest love for Christine was serving God.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Young and son, Eugene Young.
Her surviving family and friends who mourn Christine Young’s passing include nieces, Dr. Virginia Whatley Smith; Spencer Whatley (wife Patricia); Norma Gene Character; Cynthia Crawford; Rosalyn Whatley; nephews Donnie Whatley and Bobby Whatley; grandsons Eugene Rudolph Young, Jr. (with daughter Tamika); Eric Randolph Young (with son Eric Jr.), and daughter-in-law Mary Helen Young; cousins include Charles Barlow, June Callaway Barlow and Gilbert Hunter. Great nieces and nephews include Alexis Balkum; Elworth Smith, Jr. (wife Carol), Sydney Smith, and a host of other relatives and dear friends in the New Zion and Chattanooga communities.
Funeral services will be held at noon on Monday, May 9, at New Zion Missionary Baptist Church. Interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery.
The body will lie in state Sunday afternoon at John P. Franklin Funeral Home, 1101 Dodds Ave., 622-9995.
