City Council Denies Highway 58 Storage Units And Shallowford Road Pharmacy; Approves 6 St. Elmo Homes

  • Tuesday, April 12, 2016

The City Council on Tuesday approved rezoning for six single-family homes in St. Elmo, but denied rezoning for a pharmacy on Shallowford Road and storage buildings on Highway 58.

ALC Holdings is planning the homes on half an acre at 1605 and 1691 W. 39th St. near Old Mountain Road.

Representative Mike Price said, under the current zone, the group could put duplexes and townhomes. However, he said that would have been a hodgepodge development.

There will be an alley created in the rear.

Mr. Price said the homes should sell for $250,000 or more.

St. Elmo resident Tim McDonald said the project was too dense and would set a bad precedent. He also said the section near the Incline Railway is already very congested.

Dr. Roger Ray had wanted to put the pharmacy on property owned by Lamar and Wanda Threat at 6420 Shallowford. However, residents of nearby Edgemon Forest had problems with the proposal.

A number of meetings between the proponents had neighbors had failed to yield an agreement.

A developer planning the storage units at 5116 and 5120 Highway 58 acknowledged that he had not worked closely with the neighbors. He asked for a delay to give time for a meeting.

Residents said the property would likely add to runoff problems.

However, Councilman Russell Gilbert moved for a denial and it was approved.
