Two Chattanooga-area projects are among those being considered in the 2016 Silver Anniversary Engineering Excellence Awards competition, presented by the American Council of Engineering Companies of Tennessee. The award is one of the highest honors an engineering firm can receive and is considered the “Academy Awards of the engineering industry.”

The Chattanooga area projects competing for 2016 awards are:

Chattanooga WPA Ditch Program, Phase 1, Chattanooga
Completed by Amec Foster Wheeler for city of Chattanooga
As a proactive step to mitigate flooding, deterioration and ecological stress in the stormwater
infrastructure, Amec Foster Wheeler worked on a condition assessment report, scoring system,
and rehabilitation plan for the 23-mile long system of ditches built by the Works Progress
Administration in the city of Chattanooga between 1936-1941.  Amec Foster Wheeler
integrated mobile application and GIS technology into survey, field condition assessment and
modeling, providing a cost savings of 50 percent on the data collection portion of the project.  This scientific approach to project prioritization will allow the city of Chattanooga to take
appropriate actions to rehabilitate the system over the next several years.

Widening of U.S. Highway 27 (SR 29) Manufacturers Rd. to SR 8, Chattanooga
Completed by Volkert, Inc. for Tennessee Department of Transportation
Labeled the “Gateway to Downtown Chattanooga,” Volkert, Inc. and Wright Brothers Construction worked together to complete this $105.6 million project.  This 3-year project spanned 1.62 miles and converted four lanes of traffic to six.  It included 33 retaining walls, six bridges, new road realignment and high mast lighting. At the peak of construction, crews worked two shifts, seven days a week to complete the project on schedule.

Project entries from Nashville, Knoxville, Jackson, Tri-Cities, and surrounding areas are also up for consideration. The winners of the 2016 Engineering Excellence Awards will be announced on the evening of Tuesday, March 8, during the Silver Anniversary awards banquet at the Franklin Marriott Cool Springs, Franklin.  Additional information about the Awards can be found at www.acectn.com/engineering-excellence-awards/2016-awards/

In 2015, The TDOT – SR-254 over Otter Creek Bridge project, completed by Nashville engineering firm Gresham, Smith and Partners, won the top prize.
