The director of the new Bradley County Workhouse will be named Wednesday, Bradley County Sheriff Eric Watson said.
The Sheriff’s Office will host a meeting of the Law Enforcement Committee of the Bradley County Commission at noon in the BCSO Community Room next to the lobby area.
Construction is set to begin soon on the workhouse, which will house up to 128 non-violent, low security inmates, plus office space for employees.
It will be built adjacent to the Bradley County Jail and Courts.
The sheriff said the building will free up bed space in the existing jail, which is at or above capacity most days.
Sheriff Watson said, “I am gratified for the trust the Bradley County Commission has placed in me and the Bradley County Sheriff’s Office by placing the new workhouse next to the jail facility. We expect the workhouse will be “revenue neutral” and will pay for itself. The term “workhouse” is exactly what we expect, as the men who are allowed to serve their sentences there will certainly work.”
He added, “We are excited about the possibilities the new workhouse will bring to Bradley County.”
