Northside Neighborhood House Receives Gift From Food Lion

  • Tuesday, February 9, 2016

Northside Neighborhood House has received $1,000 from the Food Lion Feeds Charitable Foundation to help feed and provide education to local residents. Northside Neighborhood House will use the gift for its Healthy Families Program, which offers cooking classes and family dinner nights.

“The NNH is so grateful for this support from Food Lion Feeds Charitable Foundation,” says Brianne Lalor, chief development officer. “Our Healthy Families Program was created in 2014 as a way to offer supplemental services to help promote self-sufficiency and healthy lifestyles.”

Through the Healthy Families Program, the NNH offers bi-monthly cooking classes that teach participants how to shop for healthier foods, stretch their food dollars and more. A professor in Dietetics from the University of Tennessee Chattanooga leads the classes. In addition, NNH also offers Family Dinner Nights at its main office and in schools in North Hamilton County. Family Dinner Nights provide local families with a free, healthy meal and time to socialize with their families. After dinner, a local expert leads a short workshop for parents with topics such as child safety and handling stress.

The Northside Neighborhood House was founded in 1924 by a group of women with the purpose of providing assistance to those living in North Chattanooga. With an expanded service area from its beginning 90 years ago, the NNH serves residents in seven zip codes—from North Chattanooga to Bakewell.  "The mission of the NNH is to promote the independence of residents north of the river by providing a hand up through education and assistance. The NNH provides service to the community through three programs, including emergency direct assistance, education for children and adults and two thrift stores," officials said.

Established in 2001, the Food Lion Feeds Charitable Foundation provides financial support for programs and organizations dedicated to feeding the hungry in the communities it serves. Since its inception, the foundation has awarded more than $9 million in grants.
