In lieu of the potential dangers real estate agents face on a daily basis and the growing number of recent attacks on realtors, self-defense has become both a hot topic and a crucial concern. With this in mind, the Greater Chattanooga Association of Realtors (GCAR) is preparing local agents with a series of interactive self-defense courses tailored to the safety risks specific to the realty community. The first class of the 2016 series was held Friday.
“Every day, agents are interacting alone with people in isolated homes or sites, often walking into the unexpected and into situations where they may be left vulnerable,” said Nathan Walldorf, GCAR president. “The ability to be aware of their surroundings, anticipate hazards and ultimately defend themselves if it comes to that is crucial. With these classes, we hope to equip agents with both peace of mind and life-saving knowledge. ”
Friday’s four-hour course was led by safety experts Jim Hogwood and Jon Fish from the National Self-Defense Agency. Realtors were given lessons in personal appearance, social media and anti-abduction skills in order to effectively ward off potential attacks.
“There are times when calling 911 isn’t enough, and by the time police arrive, it may be too late,” said Mr. Walldorf. “Our goal is to make sure agents leave the class armed with practical safety tips and self-defense techniques that could very well save their lives. It’s all about being prepared and therefore empowered.”
Individuals interested in future sessions can register online at GCAR.net. GCAR members may register for $40, while non-members can register for $55. Each class will be limited to 20 people, and remaining sessions are scheduled for April 22, June 3 or Aug. 5— each beginning at 12 p.m. and ending at 4 p.m. In light of the interactive, hands-on nature of the class, agents are asked to dress comfortably.
