FRANKLIN, Tenn. – It was a perfect day for Region 4-AAA teams here at the State Duals on Friday.

The Bradley Bears and Soddy Daisy Trojans both waltzed into Saturday afternoon’s championship semifinals with a pair of impressive performances at the Williamson County Agricultural Expo.

The Trojans, improving to 16-3 with Friday’s two wins, started the day with a 41-34 win over Independence while advancing again with a 40-26 win over Arlington.

The Bears were equally impressive as they improved to 23-2 with wins over Bartlett in the opening round by a dominant 45-27 final before sending Gibbs into the losers bracket by a 34-31 score.

Soddy Daisy will face defending Class AAA State Duals runner-up Wilson Central in one semifinal match while Bradley will challenge Science Hill in the other.  Those two winners will battle for the championship at 7 p.m.

local time.

“We aren’t re-inventing the wheel, but we’re just trying to put our best foot forward and giving our best effort.  That’s what we did today,” said Soddy Daisy coach Jim Higgins following the second match.

“We just want to keep up the Soddy Daisy style of aggressive wrestling, but we showed up today, wrestled well and had a little fun in the process.  We just hope to keep the momentum going on Saturday.

“We were consistent across the board and these guys feed off each other’s success, but we’re still young in a lot of places and don’t always know how to handle anxiety.

“As far as tomorrow’s match is concerned, I haven’t been watching Wilson Central and don’t know much about them.  We just have to keep going what we’ve been doing to get to this point,” Higgins smiled.

Independence had a 10-9 lead after a split of the first four matches, but Soddy Daisy then won six in a row for a 41-10 lead before forfeiting the last four.

Emory Holcomb, Connor Stiles, Chase Rogers and Billy Rogers all had pins for the Trojans in that run while Tucker Russo added five team points with a technical fall at 160.

Then in the match against Arlington, the Trojans built a 19-0 lead by winning the first five matches and it was never close.

Holcomb, Chase Rogers and Trace McNew all had pins for the Trojans in that match while Jacob Kilgore had a major decision and Chase Payne, Slater Daniel, Tony Wilson and Ty Boeck all had regular decisions.

Bradley didn’t have any trouble whatsoever with either of its opponents.

The Bears won nine of the first 10 matches against Bartlett and had a commanding 45-3 lead before forfeiting the final four weights.

T.J. Hicks, Hunter Parker, Knox Fuller, Austin Matthews, Donnie Beyer and Ed Elkins all had pins for Bradley with the last four all coming inside the opening minute.  Elkins had the quickest as his match at 170 pounds lasted all of 14 seconds.

Then in the match against Gibbs, the Bears again dominated from the start by winning eight of the first nine matches for a 34-3 lead following Brandon Cook’s major decision at 170.

Joshua LaCoe and Beyer had the only pins while Fuller had a technical fall.

Bradley coach Ben Smith tries to remain cool and calm in most circumstances and he’s successful most of the time, but he had a tough day on Friday after at least one of his wrestlers had trouble making weight.

“We’ve had a great week so far.  I just try to stay calm and relaxed most of the time, but today has been a stressful day for me.  The good news is that we’re just one match away from the finals.

“We know that anything can happen and we remember all too well how we laid an egg against Wilson Central in the semifinals last year.  I’m just looking for more consistency tomorrow, but we’ll just go hard and see what happens.

“We may have practiced too hard yesterday afternoon and this morning, but we had fun at Father Ryan and I’ll take the blame for that,” Smith added.

Both semifinal matches are set to begin at 1 p.m. local time with the championship match set for 7.

The Cleveland Blue Raiders are the three-time defending AAA state champs, but they got beat by Soddy Daisy in the Region Duals semis and they aren’t here this year.
