University of Tennessee at Chattanooga junior Jasmine Joyner (Southaven, Miss.) was selected the Southern Conference women’s basketball Player of the Month for January, the league office announced today.
Joyner averaged 13.6 points and 10.5 rebounds per game in January with 31 blocked shots. She shot 50 percent or better five times in eight games and recorded two double-doubles. She scored in double figures six times and three times topped double figures in rebounding.
At Furman Joyner had 21 points and matched career-high for rebounds with 20.
She added six blocked shots and a career-best five assists in the win. Her second double-double was in the Mocs win over UNCG. She had 18 points and 14 rebounds in the contest to go along with four assists.
Joyner was on the verge of a triple double in the Mocs’ game against Western Carolina with 13 points, nine rebounds and eight blocked shots. Her eight blocks tied her school record for rejections in a game and set the McKenzie Arena record for Chattanooga.
Joyner made 43-of-88 (48.9%) shots from the field in the month of January and was 78.9 percent (22-28) from the free throw line. She averaged 35.4 minutes per game in the month playing all 40 minutes five times.
Joyner holds the school record for career blocked shots with 276 and is ranked second all-time in the SoCon. She currently leads the nation averaging four blocked shots per game and leads the NCAA in total blocked shots with 88.
