New Walker County Commissioner Whitfield To Move Public Meetings To Evenings And To Larger Venue; Will Also Be Listening Sessions

  • Friday, December 9, 2016

Walker County Sole Commissioner-Elect Shannon Whitfield said there will be a new arrangement for holding of public commissioner sessions when he takes place at the start of January.

Current Commissioner Bebe Heiskell has held Thursday meetings at 3:30 p.m. from time to time in a conference room at her office near the Walker County Courthouse in LaFayette. Mr. Whitfield said those meetings have often been postponed with short notice.

The meetings are a bit different than most commission meetings because Walker County has only the one elected commissioner.

There is only one official at the head of the table for the sessions.

Mr. Whitfield, who plans to push for doing away with the sole commissioner over a four-year period, said he will hold public meetings twice a month at 6:30 p.m.

He said they will be at a larger venue - probably at the Walker County Courthouse.

Mr. Whitfield said he plans to hold to the meeting schedule - even if he does not have much on his own agenda. He said the sessions will largely be to hear concerns from the public.
