Members of the Judge David Campbell Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution served dinner Saturday at the Chattanooga Community Kitchen at 727 East 11th St., along with Michael Lindsey and Jerry Triplett.
Mr. Lindsey made a hearty 15-bean soup and members of the chapter furnished bread sticks and sliced peaches for desert. Not only did they provide a meal for the diners, but also presented them with bags containing a pair of gloves, two pairs of socks, a stocking cap, and a fleece scarf made by chapter members.
The original intent was to reach veterans in the local area who are struggling with housing; however, as the project developed, the chapter desired to help all who would dine at the kitchen.
Members assisting with serving dinner and handing out the packages of winter wear were Regent Susan Lindsey, Service for Veterans committee member Sally Michaud, Linda Triplett, Juanita Jennings, Betty Damon, Charlotte Smalley and Pennie Layne.
One hundred and thirty bags were handed out; however, over 300 scarves were cut by chapter members over a three-month period. The remaining scarves will be given to individual veterans at various activities over the next few months. Many of the children also received stocking hats and scarves.
