GreenTrips Announces #MoveRight2016 Challenge Winners

  • Tuesday, November 15, 2016

GreenTrips, The Chattanooga Hamilton-County Regional Planning Agency (RPA)’s award-winning transportation incentive program has completed its third annual MoveRight Challenge on iGreenTrip.org.

City of Chattanooga employees, EPB and RootsRated walked away winners in the large, medium, and small employer categories, respectively.

Local employers competed to see whose workforce could log the most GreenTrips between September 1 and October 31, 2016.

Taking GreenTrips helps reduce the number of cars being used to transport only one person; this reduction of single-occupancy trips is especially beneficial for both traffic flow and air quality.

“I'm excited to see RootsRated win this for the first time,”said Mark McKnight, co-founder and Chief Marketing Officer of RootsRated. “We won last year when I was at Rock/Creek, so it’s fun to get some friendly competition going with my old co-workers. It was a tight contest, and we won with only five more trips out of hundreds total. Congrats to Rock/Creek's employees for getting so many people involved. At RootsRated, we see the strong link between transportation options, population health, the built environment, and productivity. Thanks to Green Trips for making this challenge happen.”

The three winning companies logged over 3,000 GreenTrips in only two months, avoiding over 12,000 pounds of airborne automobile pollution.

Throughout this year’s competition, individuals at competing companies avoided nearly 58,000 pounds of airborne pollution by logging over 9,300 alternative trips. These trips represent over 96,000 miles traveled using a mode of transportation that helps alleviate traffic congestion and air pollution, such as walking, cycling, carpooling, taking public transit or avoiding trips by telecommuting or working a compressed workweek.

The winning companies will be presented with awards at a special community celebration on November 19th along the Brainerd Levee / South Chickamauga Creek Greenway at Brainerd Park Shopping Center (5845 Brainerd Road). Participating employees will also receive special prizes in addition to the rewards earned through GreenTrips monthly contests.

The MoveRight Celebration, hosted in coordination with Grassroots midTown, will call attention to the connections offered through the South Chickamauga Creek Greenway - soon to be connected to the Tennessee Riverwalk, creating a 25-mile greenway stretching from St. Elmo to Camp Jordan in East Ridge. The event will feature outdoor yoga, electric and traditional bicycles, prizes, science activities relating to the South Chickamauga Creek, stuff the Subaru, electric car demonstrations and a bike ride / walk to a movie at the Brainerd Complex.

“GreenTrips is about helping connect people to healthier, more sustainable transportation options,” Jonathan Gibbons, GreenTrips Coordinator, said. “We are so  fortunate to live in such a beautiful area and to have transportation options like the South Chickamauga Creek Greenway & Tennessee Riverwalk running through the heart of our community.”

The GreenTrips program continues to provide education, incentives, and encouragement to make the most of our transportation system. As we attract new residents and host more out-of-town guests, having green mobility choices enables us to grow as a community while maintaining a high quality of life. Recent expansions of the Riverwalk and Bike Chattanooga networks, the new all-electric car share program, and CARTA's systemwide transit improvements are making it even easier to choose a GreenTrip,” said Melissa Taylor, director of RPA’s Strategic Long Range

Planning department through which the program is run.

Organizations that participated in the Challenge were BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee, Bellhops, CHA1 Amazon Fulfillment Center, the City of Chattanooga, Coyote Logistics, EPB, Hamilton County government, PlayCore, River City Company, Rock/Creek, RootsRated, Skuid, Society of Work, TVA, The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga and Unum.

Last year’s winners were the City of Chattanooga, Coyote Logistics, and Rock/Creek in the large, medium and small employer categories.

GreenTrips is an ongoing program open to the public with no user fees. Points earned by all GreenTrips members can be redeemed for rewards from local and national providers each month. Funding is made possible by the federal Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality Improvement Program and eligible trips include any travel to or from Catoosa or Hamilton counties and the northern portions of Walker and Dade Counties.

Those interested in the program should visit GreenTripsCHA.org or contact the GreenTrips

staff at GreenTrips@Chattanooga.gov.
