A Ten Mile, Tn., man is being held on kidnapping and aggravated assault charges in Whitfield County.

On Thursday at approximately 9:40 p.m., deputies were dispatched to 2142 Beaverdale Road in reference to an assault that had taken place. Upon arrival, the officers found Terry Whaley, 53, with lacerations and abrasions to the head. Mr. Whaley informed officers that he and Monica Cunningham were sitting in his truck in his driveway when Gregory Stephens (Monica’s ex-boyfriend) pulled up.

He advised Stephens came over to his truck and started hitting both of them with some type of a blunt object. He pulled Ms. Cunningham out of the vehicle and forcefully dragged her to his vehicle. Upon forcing her into his car (2007 black Chevrolet HHR) he drove off. Officers spent the rest of the night attempting to locate Ms. Cunningham and Stephens, without success.

On Friday morning, investigators determined Stephens' mother lived in Ten Mile, Tn., and he had been frequently staying at her residence. Investigators contacted law enforcement authorities in that area to help and locate Stephens and the victim.

Shortly after 9 a.m., authorities were notified they had located the victim at his mother’s residence but he was not at the residence. The victim also had lacerations and abrasions to the head area. The victim was brought back to Whitfield County.

At approximately 10:05 a.m., Sergeant Boling and Deputy Thompson of the Whitfield County Sheriff’s Office were monitoring traffic on I-75 for Stephens when they observed him driving the Chevrolet HHR south bound around the 339 mile marker. When the officers attempted to stop Stephens he refused to stop and tried to elude officers at a high rate of speed. The pursuit left the interstate at the Rocky Face exit and traveled back north on Highway 41. Stephens lost control of his vehicle in front of the Rocky Face Post Office and rolled the vehicle on its top in a ditch. He was taken into custody at that time, and was transported to Hamilton Medical Center to be checked out and was cleared to be transferred to the jail.

Gregory David Stephens, 48, of Ten Mile, Tn., is being held in the Whitfield County Jail without bond on numerous charges, including kidnapping and aggravated assault.
