Chattanooga Police Department's Tips For A Safe Halloween

  • Wednesday, October 26, 2016
Halloween is a fun night of the year for many kids and adults. It should also be a safe night for everyone. The Chattanooga Police Department wants everyone to have a happy and safe Halloween by following these tips.

PARENTS/GUARDIANS

Escort children and carry a flashlight &/or glow stick while trick-or-treating.
Know who is trick-or-treating with your children.
Walk on sidewalks and not in middle of the street.
Tell your children to not enter any homes.
Inspect all treats before allowing children to eat them.
Choose fireproof costumes made of light or bright colored materials so they are more easily seen at night.
Place reflective or glow in the ark tape on costumes to help make them more visible.
Make sure your child’s vision isn’t restricted by their costume or mask.
Make sure your child knows their home address and a parent/guardian’s phone number in case they get lost.

TRICK-OR-TREATERS
Do not trick-or-treat alone.
Stay in neighborhoods you know.
Obey all traffic signals and look in all directions before crossing the street.
Don’t dart in and out of cars and driveways.
Stay on sidewalks - If there aren’t any stay as far left of the roadway as possible.
Only trick-or-treat at homes with their porch light on.
Don’t eat candy collected until an adult inspects it.

HOMEOWNERS
Turn on porch light so children know it’s ok to trick-or-treat there.
Hand out only commercially wrapped candy.
Never invite children into your home.
Keep pets away from children.
Immediately notify Chattanooga Police about any suspicious activity by calling 423-698-2525.

MOTORISTS
Drive slowly and cautiously.
Be on the lookout for children walking in the street and darting between parked vehicles.
Be extra careful when entering/exiting driveways.
Avoid using a cell phone while driving.
NEVER drink and drive.
