Kim Fowler is an accountant’s dream.

Her behind-the-scenes administrative work at the Whitfield County Sheriff’s Office has resulted in decreased expenditures and increased revenue for the department.

Thanks to those outstanding efforts on the job, Ms. Fowler has been selected as Whitfield County’s Employee of the Month for August.

Ms. Fowler - who works for the Sheriff’s Office, Court Services - was promoted earlier this year to administrative assistant and took on many of the administrative responsibilities for the transfer and tracking of sentenced state inmates.

“In the past, our office submitted state billing but did not have a means to sufficiently audit our returns,” Captain Wes Lynch said. “One of Kim’s tasks has been to make certain that the county does get sufficiently reimbursed for state inmates.  Due to her own diligence in these matters, we are better able to track state funding issues and also to catch errors in the process, resulting in increased revenue to the county.”

Following the advice of Finance Director Alicia Vaughn, Ms. Fowler has been able to develop and maintain records to track these expenditures and hold the state accountable for accurate billing.

“Inmate population changes and other data cannot account for this increase,” Captain Lynch said, “so we must reasonably conclude that it has been her work that has improved this process.”

Ms. Fowler is also responsible for coordinating court calendars for Court Service personnel, prison transfers, and similar tasks. She also checks and verifies sentencing information and assists in arranging inmate transport and release.

Ms. Fowler also recently volunteered to work weekends to help develop and maintain the warrant system, resulting in the removal of scores of warrants that could be removed from the system due to recalls, service issues, or statute of limitation reasons.

To let the community learn more about her, Ms. Fowler filled out the following questionnaire:
