Saving energy is going to come a little easier to North Georgia Electric Membership Corporation customers who participate in the Extreme Energy Makeover project offered through a partnership with the Tennessee Valley Authority.
The program targets houses at least 20 years old and in lower income neighborhoods with a goal to reduce each home’s electric usage by 25 percent through whole-home energy efficient improvements, including insulation, heating and cooling systems upgrades and other technologies.
NGEMC will receive $1.4 million of the $50 million TVA is investing in its Smart Communities partnerships with eight local power companies across the Valley, which were chosen through an application process that included a detailed improvement plan of how and where the updates will be made.
The installation of energy improvements is actually only part of the process. Residents will receive instruction on how to get the most out of the upgrades through proper operation and maintenance. Follow-up audits will also be conducted to determine the actual amount of savings for each participating home.
“We congratulate North Georgia and their community partners on receiving this award that will greatly benefit participating residents,” said Cindy Herron, vice president of TVA EnergyRight and Renewable Solutions. “We are excited to work with our eight local power companies and their communities on project implementation.”
TVA hopes to have all projects underway no later than April 2016.
