Covenant Volleyball Rallies Past Sewanee For 3-1 Win

The Covenant volleyball team dropped the first set on Tuesday night at Sewanee, but recovered to claim the next three and a 3-1 victory over the host Tigers at Juhan Gymnasium.

It was the season opener for both teams as Covenant goes to 1-0 and Sewanee drops to 0-1. This is the third straight year the Lady Scots have won their season opener.

Ginny Moore had 17 kills and 21 digs for Covenant, while Chelsea VanDyk poured in 13 kills and a hitting percentage of .423 in the winning effort.
Schuyler Moore tallied 36 assists, nine digs and four kills. Ariana Buchanan led the way defensively with 23 digs.

Sewanee took the opening set 26-24 after rallying from a 20-15 deficit. The Tigers tallied 14 kills in the set including the final one from Casey Hassett to take a 1-0 lead in the match.

Covenant rebounded with a pair of 25-15 victories in the next two sets. The Lady Scots produced 17 kills and a .333 team hitting percentage in the third set that gave them a 2-1 match advantage. In the fourth set, Sewanee would take Covenant to extra points again but a kill from Ginny Moore gave the Lady Scots a 29-27 set win and a match victory.

Jessica Seehorn added eight kills for Covenant which also got five kills and two solo blocks from Hannah Rogers.

Sewanee was led by Diamond Stewart's 13 kills and 11 digs, while Maggie Stanford had 13 kills and three block assists. Peyton Parent led all players with 33 digs.

UP NEXT

Covenant opens the Maryville Invitational on Friday against Birmingham Southern at 7 p.m. The Lady Scots will also face Washington & Lee and Lynchburg on Saturday in the Invitational.
