Covenant Tops Sewanee 2-1 In Season Opener

  • Tuesday, September 1, 2015
In the opening match of the 2015 season, the Covenant men's soccer team defeated Sewanee 2-1 on Tuesday evening at Scotland Yard with two goals in the first half.

Covenant goes to 1-0 on the year, while Sewanee drops to 0-1 overall.

The match picked up very quickly as senior Noah Wiersema scored barely two minutes into the match from just inside the box. In the 32nd minute senior Bryce Bartelt added another goal from a couple yards outside the box. The goal for Bartelt was his first collegiate score.

At halftime the Scots were sitting comfortably with a 2-0 lead, and the Tigers' first and only goal came late into the second half off of a Matt Hawse penalty kick in the 79th minute.

Nearing the end of the first half the game started to get a little more rough, and both teams finished the game with 14 fouls a piece.
Two Sewanee players received yellow cards, one in each half.

The Tigers outshot the Scots 10-9, but Covenant keeper Daniel Kubin's five saves helped prevent Sewanee from taking the lead. Sewanee's keeper Will Merriman made a pair of saves in the losing effort.

The Scots will compete in the Maryville College Fall Classic this weekend. Covenant will face No. 24 Montclair State on Friday at 5:30 p.m.
