Clyde Leslie Markham, Jr.
Dr. Clyde Leslie Markham, Jr. died at his son’s home in Viera, Florida, on Sunday morning, August 30, 2015.
Leslie was preceded in death by his parents, Pearl and Clyde Leslie Markham, Sr., sisters, Doris Markham, Dot Welton, and brother, Weldon Markham.
He is survived by his son, Clyde Leslie “Lee” Markham III, wife Delia, five grandchildren, four step grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren, sister, Marjorie Duncombe of Paradise, CA, brothers, Lynn Markham, Brentwood, TN, and Wilbourne Markham, Signal Mountain, and seven nieces and six nephews.
He was born Aug. 6, 1928, in York, Al. He served in the United States Navy from 1946–1948 proudly on the USS Missouri, and later moved to Chattanooga in 1950.
He worked in the Chattanooga Public Schools from 1965 to his retirement in 1988. He was director of Pupil Personnel Services; he served the office proudly under the leadership of Dr. C.C. Bond until Dr. Bond’s retirement.
After his retirement from the Chattanooga Public Schools he attended the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga and learned Spanish. He later joined the Peace Corps and served in Honduras. He co-founded a home for street children through the help of local businesses in the city of Tegucigalpa.
Dr. Markham held degrees from Temple College, Baylor University, Colombia University and a Doctorate from the University of Alabama.
His funeral will be on Friday, Sept. 4, at 11:30 a.m. in the East Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home. Dr. Markham’s brother Ret. Naval Capt. and Chaplain Lynn Markham will officiate.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, Sept. 3, from 4-8 p.m. at the funeral home.
