Dalton State Volleyball Falls Twice To Indiana University Kokomo At Lindsay Wilson Classic

Columbia, KY – Indiana University Kokomo (10-1) bested Dalton State three sets to one in the first of two Saturday matches for the Roadrunners in the 16-team Lindsey Wilson Classic at the Halloway Center in Columbia, KY.

The Roadrunners (1-2) started the first set like they would own the Cougars. Dalton State jumped out to a 7-1 lead and would eventually own a seven point advantage at 20-13. IUK came roaring back with a 12-2 run to take the set, 25-22.

The second set was close almost to the end.

The final tie of the set was at 16. The Roadrunners outscored the Cougars down the stretch nine to three for the 25-19 advantage.

The Cougars broke open a 6-6 third set to build a seven point lead at 20-13.  IUK never trailed. They would hang on for the 25-20 win. The fourth set saw the squad from Kokomo scoring the Raiders 18-10 after a 7-7 tie to easily win 25-15.

Michala Askey had 39 assists and 15 digs to lead Dalton State in each category. Outside Hitter Marta Guntin had nine kills and a dozen digs. The Roadrunners received 13 kills from senior Kianna Delaney and 12 kills and nine digs from Outside Hitter Anna Metzler. Savannah Nelson added 8 kills.

Indiana University Southeast (1-2) knocked-off the Dalton State volleyball Roadrunners in three sets Saturday in the Lindsey Wilson Classic, held at the Halloway Center.

“Today was a really tough day for us,” said Coach Bruna Langner after her second loss of the day. “We had a lot of changes because we still don’t know who will start. The girls aren’t used to a lot of changes.”

The Roadrunners (1-3) started out with a 7-3 run in the first set. The Grenadiers came back to even the score at seven. They never trailed the set or the match again. The Roadrunners did come close (22-21), but fell short 25-22.

The second set was never in doubt. IU Southeast got off to a 10-2 lead and never looked back on their way to a 25-11 route.

Dalton State fell behind by 10 (13-3) in the third set, but scored the next five to make the score 13-8.  The Grenadiers then held on for the 25-17 set victory and the match.

Michala Askew had 19 assists and 11 digs for Dalton State. Wendy Perez collected ten kills, Kianna Delaney had four kills and seven digs, Anna Metzler had five kills and seven digs. Savannah Nelson added four kills and four blocks.

The Roadrunners return home to host a Tri-Match at Bandy Gymnasium on Saturday, September 5th.  “There is going to be a lot of work this week in getting ready for our home openers,” said Langner.

Dalton State and Reinhardt University will match-up at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday. Reinhardt meets Milligan College at noon. Milligan and Dalton State will play at 2:00 p.m. Admission to all Dalton State home volleyball games is free.
