Chattanooga Public Schools Teacher For Many Years Lived To 101

Jewell Elizabeth Douglass Hogue, 101, died on Tuesday, July 28, 2015 at a local health care facility. 

Jewell was born June 10, 1914, in Chattanooga to the late Charles and Sally Douglass. Jewell’s mother died when she 18 months old, leaving her to be raised by an aunt and her husband, Hattie and James Morris.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William A. Hogue.

Jewell was a teacher for many years in the Chattanooga public schools. She was also a charter member of Saint Francis Catholic Church. After the closure of Saint Francis, Jewell became a member of Saints Peter and Paul Basilica, and was a charter member of the Women’s Guild. Jewell loved giving back to her church and community, thus volunteering at Ladies of Charity, chaired and served on various organizations within the church and volunteered at Memorial Hospital for many years.

She was also a lover of dogs and was an active member of the Chattanooga Kennel Club until her illness. Other activities include playing Bridge, attending the Chattanooga Little Theater with friends, and traveling.

Survivors include cousins, Bobby Zimmerman (Homewood, Illinois), Lobelia Brown (Solon, Ohio), Andrea McCrary, Warren (Linda) Logan, Jr., Eddie and Yolanda King (caregivers), Pamela Bell, Angela Bradford, Kellie Logan, Danielle McGoy, Stephanie (Dennis) Tate, Thomas (Dethrice) Bell, Jr.; Ruby Key (Goddaughter), and a host of  other relatives and friends. 

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 4, at Saints Peter and Paul Basilica. Interment will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery. 

The body will lie in state after 12 noon on Monday, Aug. 3, and the family will receive friends from 6-7 p.m. at John P. Franklin Funeral Home.
