Michael Nelson Hurt
Special agents from the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation have obtained indictments for a former police department investigator accused of theft and misconduct while on duty.
After receiving information from the Morristown Police Department, 3rd District Attorney General Dan Armstrong requested TBI special agents investigate Michael Nelson Hurt on Feb. 2. During the course of the investigation, agents developed information that Hurt, a detective for the Morristown Police Department, received at least three payments on behalf of the department for seized vehicles and did not deposit the full amounts to the department’s bank account. Hurt resigned his position with the department in February, shortly after the TBI inquiry began.
On Wednesday, the Hamblen County Grand Jury returned indictments for Hurt, charging the 41-year-old with two counts of theft over $1,000, one count of theft under $500, and one count of official misconduct. He subsequently turned himself into the Hamblen County Jail on Wednesday, where he was booked and released after posting $10,000 bond.
