I thoroughly enjoyed Mr. Exum’s opinion piece on General Forrest. We have all been in a period of transition for years, and each succeeding generation is less and less prejudiced against other cultures. My 18 year-old son sees no color line, and has friends of all ethnicities, coming close to fulfilling Dr. King’s “Dream.”
The established quid-pro-quo over the last 50 years has been, "Okay, in exchange for the softening of our hearts, allowing integration of all institutions, and the very real embrace by succeeding generations of one another's cultures, the government will allow the honoring of the Southern culture through the use of symbols and the arts." Let us take pains to assure that agreement has not been breached.
