Students from Georgia Northwestern Technical College’s Dental Assisting program volunteered their time and skills to help provide free dental care to adults in need as part of the Georgia Mission of Mercy project held at the Georgia National Fairgrounds in Perry, Ga.
The GMOM project is an outreach program of the Georgia Dental Association and its Foundation for Oral Health. Georgia dentists, dental assistants and other volunteers from across the state took part in the program that offered free basic dental services to thousands of low-income adults.
The GNTC students assisted dentists with basic dental services which included cleanings, fillings and extractions. GMOM’s free 100-chair portable dental clinic was set up at the fairgrounds for two days with the doors opening at 5 a.m. to accommodate the large number of patients.
“I felt so accomplished when I left and will definitely be going back,” said Alexis Evans, a GNTC Dental Assisting student from Dalton. “I feel like this really made me fall in love with the profession.”
