This Old House To Open Show House Near Chattanooga This Fall

  • Thursday, June 25, 2015

This Old House Ventures Inc. will reveal its newest show-house project this fall. The house, which is currently under construction, is in Cloudland Station, a 450-acre community nestled along the side of Lookout Mountain, in Chickamauga. This is the first time the brand has built and decorated a show house from the ground up.

The TOH Cottage at Cloudland Station will be featured extensively in the 2015 November/December issue of This Old House and on the magazine’s website, and will be open to the public for tours this year from September through December.

“Cloudland Station was perfect for us because it’s a community with real architectural integrity and beautifully crafted homes,” says TOH editor Scott Omelianuk. “The stunning property feels like you’ve stepped back in time, with a village square, stone bridges, treehouses, a swimming hole, a general store, and a large event barn reconstructed from the reclaimed wood of two old Amish barns. We knew we could showcase the things TOH stands for while creating an entirely modern living space—the best of both worlds.”

This Old House collaborated with Cloudland Station developer John Tatum of Firefly Communities on the design of the 1,950-square-foot Craftsman-style cottage. Both the exterior and interior layout of the The Cottage have been shaped by TOH’s deep knowledge of what people want in a home today. The final reveal this fall will showcase popular trends high on homeowners’ wish lists: a small footprint that lives large; an open ground-floor plan; inviting outdoor living spaces; colorful, family-friendly decor; extensive storage solutions; the flexibility to grow with a family’s changing needs; usable information on superior building materials; and projects that homeowners can DIY themselves.

“We are looking to provide inspiration and accessible ideas that anyone can use in their own homes, whether they’re making modest upgrades, embarking on major remodels, or building from scratch,” says Omelianuk.  “While the primary focus of most show houses is on the furnishings, we are also paying attention to the architecture, building materials, DIY projects, and livability, which are core to our DNA.”

Designed to be flexible to accommodate a variety of lifestyles and life stages, The Cottage has two master bedrooms, one on the first floor and another on the second floor, allowing it to grow with a family and answer the needs of both retirees and second homeowners.

“We are incredibly honored to be the site for This Old House's first idea home,” said John Tatum, CEO of Firefly Communities. “This American institution has impacted and inspired so many of us for generations to attain excellence and celebrate quality and tradition in all we do.”
