Tram Up 1st Street That Proved A Dud Also Falters At Auction

  • Wednesday, May 27, 2015

Most of the 21st Century Waterfront development was a major success.

Except for that non-working tram going up the steep hill at First Street.

The city has finally given up on the unusual mode of transit and has placed it up for auction.

But there were only four bids submitted and the high was only $92.50.

The owners of the firm that built the tram, Outdoor Engineers of Golden, Colo., were informed of the auction, but they did not seek to take their creation back.

Sarah Wheeler of Compass Auction said the high bid did not meet the minimum reserve.

She said the tram will be put back into the June auction. Pre-bidding begins online on June 3 and runs through June 24, where there will be a live webcast at 10 a.m.

If a bidder submits a suitable bid, the new owner of the tram will be able to haul away the entire apparatus - except for nearby art work.

The tram ran sporadically after it was erected here, but it has not operated for many years.

It proved a liability for the city when someone fell and got wedged beneath the track.
