Korean War Veteran Held Long Career With Alstom

Garland A. Porter, Jr., 84, of Red Bank, died on May 25, 2015.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Amanda and Garland Porter, Sr. and brothers, James Porter and Charles Porter; sisters, Virginia Ann Porter, Betty Laher and Emma Miller.

He came into this world on December 22, 1930 at 8:05 p.m. Garland was a member of Red Bank United Methodist Church. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War reaching the rank of sergeant with the 190th Combat Engineers attached to the 278th Regimental Combat Team. He retired from Alstom (formerly Combustion Engineering) as an electrician after 34½ years. Garland was an avid golfer and wished to leave his golf swing to friend, Ron Fouts, who is a fair player, but could use his good swing. 

Survivors include his sister, Lucretia Travis; brother, David Porter (Sandra) along with many nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be on Thursday, May 28, at 1 p.m. at Hamilton Memorial Gardens with Reverend Bruce Galyon officiating. Pallbearers will be Barry Schneck and Darren Keylon along with nephews.

Visitation will be on Thursday from 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. at the funeral home. 

He requested donations in his memory may be made to Hospice of Chattanooga, American Cancer Society or Red Bank United Methodist Church.
