Sheriff Jim Hammond, saying his "ship is tilting," told the County Commission on Wednesday that $4 million is needed to start righting the ship.
The request includes 43 new employees, including 21 in law enforcement.
Sheriff Hammond said help needed includes four more detectives and four more court officers. He said 10 more correctional officers are needed at the jail.
"We haven't added a detective in 10 years," he said.
The sheriff cited a need for eight more school resource officers.
The request includes $130,000 for handguns, saying some are wearing out. New protective vests ($39,000) are also on the list as well as $250,000 in Tasers.
He said 25-30 new vehicles are necessary.
Sheriff Hammond again asked that his department be allowed to move to the Bridge Plan in which law enforcement employees can retire as early as 55. The officers can receive full benefits until reaching the age of Social Security.
Capt. Lynn Triplett said other agencies have adopted the plan, which he said provides a younger and more energetic work force.
