The region’s first Erlanger Neurology Update and Review Conference will be held Friday at the Chattanoogan Hotel.
The focus of this year’s conference is sports medicine, specifically sports-related concussions and head trauma. The keynote speaker, Dr. Thor Stein, is among the most foremost research and clinical neuropathologists in the world and associate professor of pathology at Boston University School of Medicine. Dr. Stein has been featured on a PBS “Frontline” special, “League of Denial: The NFL’s Concussion Crisis,” and he and his colleagues have written a number of seminal papers on sports concussion, chronic traumatic encephalopathy and related brain pathologies.
Dr. Stein is currently studying how mild traumatic brain injury influences the pathology of Alzheimer disease and CTE, along with genetic risk factors.
Also speaking at this medical conference are Dr. Tom Devlin, chairman of the Erlanger Neuroscience Department, on Epilepsy and Seizure Disorders; UT Erlanger Sports Medicine Director Dr. Bill Moore Smith, who will present a review and update on sports-related concussions; and other local specialists featured on the attached conference agenda.
