Junior Lexie Dean doubled and scored a run in Saturday's loss to Christian Brothers
A late inning three-run rally spelled trouble for the Lee softball team as Christian Brothers topped the Lady Flames, 5-2 in Saturday’s Gulf South Conference game from Bland Field.
The Lady Bucs score the go ahead runs in the sixth inning thanks in part to a Lee error that allowed the inning to continue. The home team made the most of the opportunity as Ali Hare scored on the bad throw and Leigh Ward and Holly Oyhenart followed with run-scoring singles.
The Lady Flames jumped on the board first with a pair of runs in the second frame. The speed of Amanda Lynn and Lexie Dean wreaked havoc on the bases. Lynn scored on a muffed throw after a double steal by the two top hitters in the Lee lineup.
Senior Dominique Hannah extended the lead on a RBI single up the middle scoring Dean. All totaled the Lady Flames tallied seven hits including three doubles by Lynn, Dean and junior Kaylie Drew.
Christian Brothers matched Lee with seven hits all of the single variety. Ward and Oyhenart led the way with two hits and a RBI each. Taylor Rosa-Ramon and Olivia Parsels used back to back RBI singles in the fourth inning to tie things up at 2-2.
Angie Hughes (13-7) started and worked a solid 5 2/3 innings in the circle for Lee. The junior was tagged with the loss after giving up four hits and three runs (two earned). She struck out five and walked five.
Freshman Leigh Beatenbough was called on to try and end the Lady Bucs’ sixth inning rally.
Beatenbough tossed a 1/3 of an inning allowing two unearned runs and three hits.
Kasey Beekman (6-22) pitched a complete game for CBU, scattering seven hits while yielding two runs (one unearned). Beekman walked just two batters and had three punchouts.
The loss drops the Lady Flames to 29-17 overall and 16-11 in league play. The win improves the Lady Bucs to 10-39 and 3-24 in the Gulf South Conference.
The two clubs will wrap up the series and the regular season with a doubleheader on Sunday beginning at 12 noon.
