UTC Women Win Southern Conference Tennis Opener

The second-seeded University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women’s tennis team won its opening round match at the Southern Conference Tournament today.  The Mocs dispatched Western Carolina 4-0 to advance to tomorrow’s semifinals in Greenville, S.C.

UTC started with a pair of doubles wins to take a 1-0 lead.  Junior Kayla Jones and freshman Samantha Caswell defeated Megan McLinden and Nicole Nielly 8-1 at No. 1.  Senior Kaylene Chadwell and junior Kelsey Coots followed with an 8-3 victory over Shannon Bettiol and Elizabeth Ansari at No.
2. 

Jones, Chadwell and junior Alison Storie all won in singles action.  Jones posted a (6-2, 6-0) victory over McLinden at No. 1 while Chadwell defeated Nielly (6-1, 6-2) in straight sets at No. 3.  Storie closed out the match with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Erin Maguire at No. 5. 

The Mocs equaled their win total from the last two seasons with their 18th victory.  UTC is 18-3 overall and is matched up against ETSU in tomorrow’s semis.  First serve is set for 10:00 a.m. with live scoring available on the women’s tennis schedule page on GoMocs.com.  UTC posted a 4-3 road win over the Bucs in their regular season match on April 2.
