First Vice Regent Phyllis Carter introduced Rear Admiral Vance Fry, USN, retired.

The Judge David Campbell Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution held its monthly meeting at the Holiday Inn on Shallowford Road with guest speaker Rear Admiral Vance Fry, U.S. Navy, retired. He spoke to the Daughters about the tactics of the Vietnam War and the involvement of political leadership during the war.

Admiral Fry made several points about the war. He pointed out that the United States has never done well in a war where you can’t tell the good guys from the bad or in handling conflict involving insurrection. Another point was that to fight a winnable war, there needs to be a centrally organized government to defeat. Admiral Fry also pointed out that during the Vietnam War era, there was unrest within the government, questioning both the legitimacy and/or the tactics employed in waging war. This unrest bled over into the general populace resulting in many Americans not honoring returning troops.

The Judge David Campbell Chapter, in support of veterans, has joined as a commemorative partner in the commemoration of the Vietnam War. The commemorative partner program is designed for federal, state and local communities, veterans' organizations and other nongovernmental organizations to assist a grateful nation in thanking and honoring Vietnam veterans and their families. The period of the commemoration reflects the 13 years of the war.

This commemorative period, 2012-2025, will include activities and ceremonies to achieve the following objectives of thanking and honoring veterans of the Vietnam War, including personnel who were held as prisoners of war or listed as missing in action, for their service and sacrifice on behalf of the United States and to thank and honor the families of these veterans; highlight the service of the Armed Forces during the Vietnam War and the contributions of federal agencies and governmental and non-governmental organizations that served with, or in support of, the Armed Forces; pay tribute to the contributions made on the home front by the people of the United States during the Vietnam War; highlight the advances in technology, science, and medicine related to military research conducted during the Vietnam War, and recognize the contributions and sacrifices made by the allies of the United States during the Vietnam War.
