Flash Flood Warning Issued For Hamilton County; Cancellations And Road Closings Announced

A flash flood warning has been issued for Hamilton County for Thursday afternoon.

It was reported tramp from I-24 West to Cummings Highway was closed, due to flooding.

The Chattanooga Fire Department reported roads were underwater at 3rd and Roanoke.

UTC softball’s Thursday doubleheader with non-conference foe UAB at Frost Stadium has been cancelled due to the rain.

The Lookouts game scheduled for Thursday night, has been postponed and will be played as a double-header on Saturday.

Due to road closures caused by flooding, all Hamilton County Department of Education after school and evening activities are cancelled.

The baseball parade, opening ceremony and baseball games scheduled on Lookout Mountain for Saturday have been postponed because of the rainy weather, and because officials cannot get the fields ready in time for the games. The events are now planned for Saturday, April 25.

The neighborhood block party "April on Lookout" has also been rescheduled for that same day.

St. Elmo resident, Devereaux Chivington-Stebbins, reported, "The creek on Virginia Ave. has overrun its banks and is flooding the backyards of the homes between 42nd and 43rd."

The Salvation Army was keeping its staff on standby should residents be affected.

AT 741 PM EDT...EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT OFFICIALS CONTINUE TO REPORT FLOODING IN AND NEAR THE CITY OF CHATTANOOGA. TWO TO THREE INCHES INCHES OF RAIN FELL IN THE WARNED AREA EARLIER TODAY. EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT OFFICIALS CONTINUE TO REPORT MULTIPLE ROAD CLOSURES. LOW LYING AREAS NEAR I-24 AND SOME SECONDARY ROADS IN DOWNTOWN CHATTANOOGA ARE AFFECTED. ROAD FLOODING HAS ALSO BEEN REPORTED NEAR EAST BRAINERD.

SOME LOCATIONS THAT WILL EXPERIENCE FLOODING INCLUDE... CHATTANOOGA...RIDGESIDE...COLLEGEDALE...OOLTEWAH AND EAST BRAINERD. PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS... A FLOOD WARNING MEANS THAT FLOODING IS IMMINENT OR HAS BEEN REPORTED. URBAN AREAS AND SMALL STREAMS WILL BE THE MOST AFFECTED. FLASH FLOODING IS NOT EXPECTED. HOWEVER...ALL INTERESTED PARTIES SHOULD TAKE NECESSARY PRECAUTIONS IMMEDIATELY. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO TRAVEL ACROSS FLOODED ROADS. FIND ALTERNATE ROUTES. IT TAKES ONLY A FEW INCHES OF SWIFTLY FLOWING WATER TO CARRY VEHICLES AWAY.
