Chattanooga Collaborative Senior Housing, an eight-unit development being created on Washington Street on the Southside, is for those retiring or thinking of retiring who want options other than assisted living and institutional care.  The units are designed to share some spaces in a condo-like setting, while maintaining privacy and independence.

"There are many people who want to retire in an urban environment, where they have plenty of access to events and the arts," said CCSH member Anne Curtis.  "We also feel many are looking for a housing solution that is economical and sustainable.

The project has advanced to the point that current members are in search of more investors (who may or may not actually occupy the units) to complete the process.

“We are looking for either socially and physically active people who want this community to be their last home or for those investors who want this project to succeed as a model for others," said member Finn Bille.

The building, designed by CCSH Development Company, LLC, may possibly be ready for occupancy in 18 months.

“It’s a single, environmentally friendly building with eight small private units and 4,000 square feet of shared space for daily activities such as dining, housing overnight guests, creative endeavors and storage,” said member Jay Ku. “The design will encourage social interaction and support lifestyles as we remain in place.”

Members Bill and Sandy Kurtz made the decision to invest in co-housing because, “It’s our best bet to live longer with mutually supportive social relationships and healthy lifestyle and do it in an environmentally friendly fashion.”

Richard Dube, a naturalist, is considering joining.  “I am especially interested in the landscaping potential for the property."

According to the current soon-to-be residents, units will cost between $175,000 and $300,000, which includes a share in the common space.

“We anticipate that prospective members are likely to sell their houses in order to buy a CCSH condo,” said member Sue Reynolds.

A list of younger people who might be interested in the project in the future is also being compiled.

“We very much encourage anyone who would just like to discuss the prospects of CCSH, or just has questions about it to contact us at ccseniorhousing@gmail.com,” said member Dr. Charles Hughes.
