Senate Education Committee Approves Opportunity Scholarships

  • Wednesday, March 4, 2015

The Senate Education Committee passed the "Tennessee Choice and Opportunity Scholarship Act" Wednesday afternoon 8-0-1.

Senator Todd Gardenhire is a sponsor of the school voucher bill (SB 0999).

The Tennessee Federation for Children issued a statement commending lawmakers "for voting to give low and middle-income families and their children the access to a high-quality education that they deserve."

"Today is another victory for school choice in Tennessee," said Tony Niknejad of the Tennessee Federation for Children. "A vast majority of Tennesseans want to see educational options for their children, especially for the students that are trapped in failing schools. After the House voted yesterday in subcommittee to approve its companion bill, this vote shows that the legislative momentum is strong and continues to grow."
