LAS VEGAS – The Lee University men’s golf team placed seventh in a field of 16 teams at the Las Vegas Desert Classic.
After posting a round of 302 on Sunday the Flames finished with a 301 on Monday and will return to Cleveland with a 603 total in the 36-hole event staged at the Palute Golf Club-Snow Mountain.
The University of the Redlands (Calif.), placed by medalist winner Bobby Holden (76-67 – 143) claimed top honors with scores of 299-261 – 590.
Oklahoma Christian, the first-round leader slipped to second place (292-300 – 592).
West Florida moved up to the third spot (300-295 – 595) Missouri-St. Louis (296-300 – 596) tied for fourth with Arkansas Tech (294-302 – 595). Tiffin University was sixth (299-300 – 599).
Lee’s Shea Sylvester tied with fourth other golfers for second place and earned a spot on the all-tournament team. The sophomore followed his 70 on Sunday with a 74 on Monday and the 144 total.
Sam Johnston (Oklahoma Christian), Juan Miguel Hereida (West Florida) and Alex Mahlik (Arkansas) were deadlocked with Sylvester.
Lee freshman Corey Sheppard (72-76 – 148) tied for 12th. Taylor Davis improved his play by six strokes (81-75 – 156) and Ryne Thompson slipped to 79-84 – 163. Peyton Sliger, who failed to sign his scorecard on Sunday, came back with a 76 on Monday.
The Flames will return to the links on March 9. They will travel to Jackson, Tenn. to take part in the Grover Page Classic.
